COMMUNITY GARDEN & SUSTAINABILITY

KCC is dedicated to promoting sustainability and facilitating a healthy community and environment

Environmental education promotes critical and creative thinking skills and inspires children to become more engaged with their communities

We are committed to protecting our environment to ensure a sustainable future for our children and through everyday practices we strive to be better tomorrow than we are today. Our Centre actively participates in caring for our environment and promotes sustainable practices through educating and working with the children, families and wider community.

Our Community garden is accessible to all groups within the centre. A variety of vegetables, herbs and indigenous edible plants are grown. Signage in the garden provides information about the various plants and how they can be eaten or used.

Our Community Garden encourages families to participate in our sustainable practices. We believe children can develop new skills and have fun while gardening for example by tending to their own plants, they can learn about the science and the nature from growing their own food, weather and the environment, and about healthy eating. There is a variety of interesting activities children and parents can be involved in, such as planting, mulching, weeding and cooking.

Children are involved in the planting process and harvest different items to be used in cooking experiences, in the kitchen and also for families to take home.

It helps children to understand why the environment is important and provides them with the building blocks they need to live eco-friendly and sustainable lives. Children are encouraged to research, investigate how and why things happen, and form their own opinions on complex issues rather than just being told information.
